Pre-Pointe Dance Assessments
Pre-Pointe Assessments for Ballet Dancers
Starting pointe is an exciting milestone in a dancer’s journey. However, pointe work places significant stress on the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. A pre-pointe assessment helps determine whether a dancer is physically ready to begin pointe safely and successfully.
Our podiatrists perform detailed dance-specific assessments to evaluate strength, flexibility, alignment, and control — all key factors required for safe pointe work.
Our goal is to support dancers, parents, and teachers in making informed decisions that prioritise long-term health and performance.
What is a Pre-Pointe Assessment?
A pre-pointe assessment is a comprehensive physical screening designed to determine whether a ballet dancer has the strength, control, and stability needed to begin pointe work.
During the assessment, a podiatrist evaluates the dancer’s:
- Foot and ankle strength
- Range of motion and flexibility
- Lower limb alignment
- Core stability
- Balance and coordination
- Functional dance movements
These tests help identify whether a dancer meets the physical requirements for pointe and whether any areas require improvement before progressing.
Why Pre-Pointe Assessments Are Important
Beginning pointe before the body is ready can significantly increase the risk of injury. Pointe work places up to several times a dancer’s body weight through the feet and ankles, making proper strength and alignment essential.
A pre-pointe assessment helps to:
- Reduce the risk of foot and ankle injuries
- Identify strength or flexibility limitations
- Detect biomechanical concerns early
- Support proper technique development
- Protect developing bones and growth plates
- Ensure dancers begin pointe at the appropriate time
Every dancer develops at a different rate, which means age alone does not determine readiness. A professional assessment ensures each dancer progresses safely.
Who Should Have a Pre-Pointe Assessment?
Pre-pointe assessments are recommended for:
- Ballet students preparing to begin pointe
- Dancers aged approximately 10–13 starting pointe preparation
- Students advised by their dance teacher to undergo screening
- Dancers who want to reduce injury risk before pointe training
Many dance schools now recommend health professional screening prior to pointe to help ensure safe progression.
What Happens During the Assessment?
A typical pre-pointe assessment takes approximately 30–45 minutes and includes a series of dance-specific tests.
Your podiatrist will assess:
Foot and Ankle Strength
Evaluating whether the intrinsic foot muscles and ankle stabilisers are strong enough to support pointe work.
Range of Motion
Assessing flexibility through the ankle, foot, and lower limb to ensure safe pointe positioning.
Balance and Stability
Testing control and stability during single-leg movements and ballet positions.
Alignment and Biomechanics
Checking lower limb alignment to identify any factors that may increase injury risk.
Functional Dance Tests
Performing movements such as relevés, pliés, and balance tests to assess technique-related control.
Benefits of a Pre-Pointe Assessment
A professional pre-pointe assessment can help dancers:
✔ Reduce risk of injury
✔ Improve strength and stability
✔ Identify areas that need improvement
✔ Build confidence before starting pointe
✔ Improve overall technique and control
✔ Receive personalised strengthening exercises
✔ Support long-term dancer health and performance
If a dancer is not quite ready for pointe yet, we provide targeted exercises and guidance to help them safely prepare.
What You’ll Receive After the Assessment
Following the assessment, dancers will receive:
- A readiness evaluation
- A detailed report outlining findings
- Individualised exercises to improve strength and control
- Guidance for dancers, parents, and teachers regarding next steps
Our aim is to help each dancer progress safely and confidently.
